The history of the Rixwell Hotel Konventa Sēta

3* Superior hotel "Rixwell Hotel Konventa Sēta" houses one of the oldest historical Medieval building complexes of Riga on Kalēju Street 9/11.

At the beginning of the 13th century, Wittgenstein Castle was built on this place at the beginning of the 13th century. It was the residence of the first master of the Order of the Brothers of the Sword that soon united with the Teutons.

During the Livonian War at the end of the 13th century, the residence of the knights was destroyed and moved to the preserved chapel building (St. George's Church). In 1330 warriors of Brothers of the Sword built a new castle on the bank of the Daugava river and left the territory of the Wittgenstein castle.

These buildings have suffered from fire and were constantly rebuilt. As a result of that, many architectural details were lost. Although the Convent Yard got a new look in the 18th century, it continued to collapse. Until the 80's of the 20th century, it was on the verge of complete destruction.  Experts from Latvia and Germany teamed up to restore this architectural monument.

A complete restoration was finished in 1996.

Today there are 9 buildings in the territory of a Medieval castle and some of them have historical names. Today a hotel complex, museums, souvenir shops, bars and cafes are located in a Convent Yard. The building complex of the hotel is recognized as a national architectural monument.
